CIOZone Tech Updates Dual-Boot Chrome OS With Ubuntu Linux on CR-48, Oracle and Microsoft partner on Patent Some users believe Google's Chrome OS makes Web surfing an incredibly pleasant and secure experience, but most of the problems that have surfaced relate to what it can not currently do - i.e. nearly everything a traditional desktop operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux can. One solution will be dual-booting, allowing users to choose either Chrome OS or a Linux distribution at boot time. Google's Chromium project site is now hosting instructions for booting Ubuntu Linux alongside Chrome OS. The process is cumbersome but indicates that dual-booting Chrome OS should be possible and a bit simpler when Google make production releases available in mid-2011. As Novell has finally sold itself, part of the deal includes the sale of 882 patents to a consortium backed by Microsoft. It turns out that Microsoft's partners in this patent sharing deal are Apple, Oracle, and EMC. Can these companies really work together and share intellectual property? It has been reported that the Novell patent collection includes IP surrounding network data encryption, UNIX like files ystems, and Networked based server algorithms. In what has been seen as another international endorsement of open source software, the Australian Bureau of Statistics will use the 2011 Census of Population and Housing as a dry run for XML-based open source standards DDI and SDMX in a bid to make for easier machine-to-machine data, allowing users to better search for and access census datasets. The census will become the first time the open standards are used by an Australian Federal Government agency. |
