At the end of last year, Forrester Research surveyed hardware decision makers in North America and Europe and found that organizations were planning to virtualize significant portions of their x86 servers by the end of 2009.

On average, respondents said they had virtualized 24% of their servers already and were planning to have 48% or their servers virtualized in two years, although the research company noted that many IT executives might be too optimistic in their projections of how many of their organization's servers could be virtualized in that time span.

The virtualization findings were culled from a Forrester survey of some 2,000 IT leaders about their technology purchasing and adoption plans. About half those polled were from small and medium businesses and about half from larger enterprises.

Firms plan to virtualize many more servers in the next two years.

Base: server decision-makers at North American and European organizations with 100 or more employees that have implemented server virtualization or are implementing in the next 12 months.
