The recent incident that social-networking startup Blippy suffered through offers a great example for why every company of every size could use a chief security officer (CSO).

Blippy inadvertently posted some of the credit and debit card numbers of its users on its website in February; a problem that the company quickly corrected within a few short hours. However, the Web remembers everything; Google happened to crawl the Blippy site when the financial information was posted and indexed it. A few months later, an enterprising individual decided to see if the credit card information of Blippy's users could be found on the Web, and discovered the numbers by searching Google.
