Tech Blog Goes Down on Eve of Apple Tablet Day

TechCrunch, the Michael Arrington-founded blog that people either love or love to hate, got hacked Tuesday morning at 1:30 a.m. ET. The site went down for an hour, came back online briefly, and then went down again a couple of hours later.

Rather than being treated to TechCrunch's usual commentary, visitors were greeted with the message, "What a [expletive] useless hack, isn't it? Bleh," and were redirected to a porn site.

As of 11:00 a.m. ET, TechCrunch was "still gathering information on how the site was compromised," and promised to update users when more information was available.

The latest in a seemingly endless supply of Apple tablet photos purported to be leaked by the usual reliable sources, these, posted by UI designer Dustin Curtis, have sparked some lively debate. This, despite the fact that they essentially just show a flat screen sitting on a MacBook keyboard. Time to move on, people ...

It will be difficult for the Apple Tablet to live up to the hype surrounding its launch.

Here's the big question I have. What will the tablet be able to do that I can't already do with a $300 netbook? I'm willing to be surprised, but once we finally know what the Apple Tab is all about, it will be interesting to do a direct comparison.

Jan 26th is an important date - it is Australia day. Maybe someone thought it was more Australian to surf porn on Australia day than to worry about techie stuff ;-)
