Tech Actually Improves Family Time -- O2

Technology actually helps family attain more free time and improve their ties, according to a recent large survey by O2, the UK mobile phone company.

"The research revealed that the increase in communications, thanks to mobile, email and social networks, makes the organization of family affairs easier. And, in freeing up the day for the family to spend quality time together, technology plays a positive part in fostering family ties."

Of course, you would expect a phone company to say so, but it fits my observations, and ways of working. A bit of email each day even while ostensibly on vacation keeps me in touch with work.

O2 found a high level of spending on tech and families don't want to cut back on broadband, even in a recession.

"And anecdote suggests that more people prefer to be able to keep on top of things at work when they are away rather than return to a stack of problems, even if that does mean 10 minutes a day answering emails on holiday."

Rather reassuring.

It's a slippery slope when responding on vacation. What happens if the ten minutes turns into 30 minutes because you figure ah it's just one more email? Looking forward to your thoughts on this.

I don't think the results are as cut and dried as the survey results suggest. For instance, voice communications between parent and teenager beats out texting, at least for me.

Also, I'm not sure I'd wholeheartedly agree that technology creates more family time. E-mail, PDAs and other technologies were all expected to make workers more efficient and free up more time for them. Instead, the people who use these technologies try to squeeze in even more work. From that standpoint, tech doesn't necessarily free up more time for families.

technolgy blurs the lines between work and time off, it's like your shadow on the beach...are you ever really out of reach of a work emergency?

My experience is that there may be less family time, due to technology. How many of us constantly check the buzzing blackberry during "family time" to see if it is an important email? And if it is an important email, then family time ends and work time begins.

Even though the survey suggests that organizing the family affairs is easier, I think technology cuts into family time in other ways, not work related. For instance, it is harder than making diamonds into coal to get teenagers off the computer to spend time with the family.

I too believe that technology cuts into family time, especially on vacation. Vacations are supposed to be time to unwind. Yes, you will find a lot of work piled up when you return to work, but if you allow your mind the time to truly rest and your body the time to relax you'll be in a better position to handle it when you get back to work. Too many people are addicted to their blackberries and other devices and have a hard time putting them down when they are at home or away with their families.
