Access to Facebook from mobile browsers grew 112 percent in the past year, while the number of people checking Twitter from their smart phones jumped 347 percent in the same time frame.

This according to market researcher comScore, which also said that 30.8 percent of smart-phone users accessed social networking sites from their mobile browsers in January, up 8.3 percentage points from the 22.5 percent who did during January of 2009.

These study results highlight not only the growing popularity of social networking sites, but also to the fact that mobile devices are becoming the main form of communication that people turn to more and more.

"Social media is a natural sweet spot for mobile since mobile devices are at the center of how people communicate with their circle of friends, whether by phone, text, email, or, increasingly, accessing social networking sites via a mobile browser," said Mark Donovan, senior vice president of mobile with comScore, in a statement about the study issued Wednesday.

comScore's study specifically looked at social-networking Web-site access from mobile browsers, so figures from the study don't include access to social media from dedicated mobile applications such as Facebook Mobile and TweetDeck.

However, comScore does report that nearly six million smart phone owners use dedicated mobile applications to access social networking services.
