Feds focus on American information security

Posted by groenfeldt in securityRussiansLatviacyberwarChinese

A few months ago I wrote about Richard Clarke's book Cyber War on the vulnerability of the information systems in the U.S., from defense contractors to electric utilities to corporate intellectual property.

Recently the Wall Street Journal carried a report that the federal government is launching a new program to detect cyber assaults on individuals and companies running critical infrastructure, such as electricity.

Siobhan Gorman said Raytheon has won a contract valued at $100 million for the first phase of the work and that the NSA would play a key role.

The Economist on July 3 carried a cover story on "Cyberwar, the threat from the Internet.  The threats are hard to detect, control and treaties will be hard to enforce, but the U.S. should at least start to define the rules of the road, it suggested, and a lot f the responsibility will end up with the Internet Service Providers, a point that Clarke made as well.

Both reports are well reported -- good to see someone is paying attention.
