VMware to acquire SUSE Linux - Good for Open Source? 5 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 7
According to the Wall Street Journal, VMware is
attempting to acquire Novell's SUSE Linux operating system business. This move will give VMware a full stack of enterprise software and allow it to establish itself as a full-blown infrastructure and software vendor in direct competition with Red Hat.

Is this move good for the open source community?

This is just the latest event in a trend of open source projects being absorbed by commercial entities: Sun buys MySQL, RedHat buys JBoss, Oracle buys Sun and get MySQL and Java, etc. The first signs of trouble on this front is the Oracle/Google lawsuit, although there are mitigating circumstances in that Google was using a proprietary JVM.

Yet if you believe what Larry Ellison had to say this week at Oracle World, the contributions that some of these companies can make to the open source community can be enormous. In this case Oracle claims to have integrated some key technologies from Solaris in Oracle Linux to improve performance substantially..here is the reference
