MetaCrawler
One of the earliest meta-search engines--if not the first--MetaCrawler began life in 1994 as a project of University of Washington grad student Erik Selberg and his professor, Oren Etzioni. Originally designed to study semantic structure on the Internet, the benefits of a tool that runs searches on several engines and aggregates the results became apparent. The MetaCrawler site was eventually bought by InfoSpace for $4.2 billion.
Dogpile, a meta-search engine that enjoyed greater popularity, launched in November 1996 and was also snatched up by InfoSpace.
