Archie

Archie, created by McGill University students in 1990, is generally considered the first search engine. Back before the World Wide Web took hold, people could use Archie to view a searchable list of downloadable computer files on public FTP sites--but not their content.

An improved FTP retrieval system, Gopher, appeared in 1991, along with search tools Jughead and Veronica. You still couldn't search the content within files, but Gopher allowed you to view the plain-text files that a Veronica search turned up. Archie and Veronica are no longer Internet fixtures, but it's somewhat heartening to hear that their Archie Comics counterparts may be tying the knot this summer.
