It's an exciting time for the search engine business. Yes, Google still dominates, both in terms of advertising and share of Internet searches, but change may be afoot.

Microsoft's engine has a new name and personality, and it and Yahoo are increasingly turning their focus toward unstructured data and providing the kind of context that could make search a more tailored experience. And the introduction of computational engine Wolfram Alpha has raised questions about what search engines really are. Innovation in search technology seems to come in spurts, and we may be on the verge of another. Let's take a look back at some of the biggest advances in search's nearly 20-year history.
