SAP Closes Big Week With Big Lots Print E-mail

SAP capped a busy week at the National Retail Federation (NRF) Expo in New York this week by announcing that big box retailer Big Lots had selected its enterprise resource planning software to support its growth plans.

Big Lots, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, and has 1,350 stores and $4.7 billion in revenue, will implement SAP for Retail. Big Lots chief executive Steve Fishman said the company will leverage the software to improve event pricing, and automate inventory, replenishment and tracking processes.

"SAP came in and quickly developed an understanding of our business and our unique niche in retail," Fishman said in a statement. Big Lots specializes in offering a wide range of bargain-priced merchandise such as one-of-a-kind deals, brand-name closeouts, and seasonal items. The company's goal, says Fishman, is to create "an ever-changing assortment of merchandise in a treasure-hunt atmosphere."

"We believe that implementing their products will be a big step forward toward creating an IT infrastructure to support our profit goals while continuing to provide our customers with what they have come to expect at Big Lots," he said.

SAP said Big Lots joins more than 500 retail customers who went live or expanded their investments in its software in 2007. Among those companies adopting SAP's retail offerings include, Jones Apparel Group, Wawa, a mid-Atlantic convenience store operator with 570 store locations, The Bon Ton Stores, and Family Dollar Stores.

It looks like SAP And Oracle are still battling it out for the top dog position in this space. Will the recent Oracle Acquisition of BEA Systems strengthen their offering and cause a strategic response?
