For most chief information officers, the year 2009 will go down as perhaps their toughest test of the last decade. Not only were they forced to deal with slashed or trimmed budgets, they were also challenged with having to understand how a rapidly changing technology landscape would affect their IT operations. There were plenty of important technology stories to choose from in 2009, including such moments as the return of Steve Jobs to Apple and the launch of the Palm Pre.

But what were the stories that really mattered to CIOs and corporate IT?
