Program Description:

CIOZone has launched the Green Pledge in cooperation with the New York Metro Chapter of the Society of Information Management (SIM).

We asked CIOZone members and the general IT community to make a public pledge to reduce waste and increase energy efficiency over the next 12 months.

With the economy in trouble, efforts to reduce electronic waste and energy consumption may have been delayed or pushed aside as companies focus on financial pressures. That is why now, more than ever, it is important the IT community remains diligent in ensuring that the progress made over the last year is sustained and built upon.

As Atti Riazi, CIO at international marketing and advertising company Ogilvy & Mather states: “An average American emits about 16 metric tons of CO2 per year . . . To sustain living on the Earth we need to drop to two metric tons. Can we make a commitment both on a personal and business level to make this happen?”

Wednesday, April 22, marks Earth Day 2009. CIOZone would once again like to support the movement by asking our members to use the Green Pledge Forum to state their personal and corporate goals for the coming year to reduce electronic waste and conserve energy.

More importantly, we would like the forum to be a place where members can share ideas and experiences on how to implement Green plans at the office and at home.

Perhaps you were able to reduce energy consumption by implementing virtualization technologies in the data center, or challenged your colleagues to go a week without printing paper, or simply walked to work one day a week.

Simply go to the Green Pledge Forum and tell us your stories, ideas and personal pledges, so that we can all do our part in making sure the IT community supports and leads in achieving the goals of Earth Day.

Sincerely,

The CIOZone Team

I would change the habit of the community members for using CFL to save energy, eco priting habits, recycle all the electronic waste and reuse them.

The most critical of all the issues is the processing of electronic and electrical waste in some parts of the world.
Fortunately in India we have a company to process them now. I do urge the members in India to contribute to the cause . Contact me , we will do our best

We are installing motion sensors for turning on the lights in our 5 data centers and all kitchen, bathrooms and break areas.

I’ve replaced almost all the bulbs in my home with CFL especially now that dimmable florescent bulbs are available – all my high hats have been replaced as well.

In recognition of Earth Day, I just cancelled my Monthly Water bottle delivery (4 cases per month). With 3 teenage boys this is an inconvenient reality but one that should have a significant impact. Will order earth friendly water bottles on www.sigg.com
Reported on the SIGG website: More than 90 percent of the environmental impacts from a disposable plastic bottle happen before the consumer opens it, said Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist at the U.S. Natural Resources Defense Council. «Oil for plastic, oil for shipping, oil for refrigeration and, in a small % of bottles, oil for recycling – sadly most PET bottles go to landfills. As a rule of thumb, scientists say that you can fill a PET bottle ¼ of the way with oil to symbolize how much energy goes into every bottle.
Worldwide, over 60 billion tons of plastic waste is produced every year. Plastic is particularly damaging because it is not biodegradable and plastic particles eventually become part of the food chain - as they have for example in our oceans. In some parts of the sea, there is five times more plastic than plankton. Neil Seldman, a waste recycling expert, has labeled our plastic problem as «potentially more dangerous than global warming.»

Clarice, I love your decision on water bottles. I'm also constantly harping on my teenage boys to stop using store-bought water bottles and fill up their sadly underused refillable sports bottles.
As my own undertaking this year, I pledge to follow through and find out exactly how my company is disposing of its electronic waste and to ensure that it is being handled by a reputable recycler.
