Most Social Media Projects Will Fail

In the next three years, more than 70 percent of IT-driven social media initiatives will fail, estimates Gartner. "Enterprises will need to develop entirely new skill sets around designing and delivering social media solutions," says Gartner. "Until this happens, failure rates will remain high."

Business-led social media initiatives, on the other hand, will succeed about 50 percent of time, claims the report. In the near term, says Gartner, IT organizations don't have the methods, technologies or tools necessary to design and effectively deliver social solutions. "A calculated approach to social media solution delivery must be an IT competency," asserts Gartner.
