In December 2007, Gartner said that enterprises should think long and hard before spending money on "social networking white elephants." Corporate social networking products, said the research firm, may not be as effective for businesses as technologies like instant messaging.

What a difference two years make. In a report issued today, Gartner shared some forecasts that sound just a tad more optimistic about the future of social media tools in the enterprise.

"The growing use of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook by business users has resulted in serious enterprise dialogue about procuring social software platforms for the business," says Gartner research VP Mark Gilbert. "Success in social software and collaboration will be characterized by a concerted and collaborative effort between IT and the business."

Here are Gartner's five predictions:
