Continental turns to SOA for flight ops system

Continental Airlines has announced it will work with consulting firm EDS of Plano, Texas, to build a next generation flight operations platform.

By Mel Duvall

Continental Airlines has announced it will work with consulting firm EDS of Plano, Texas, to build a next generation flight operations platform.

The companies said the new platform will leverage EDS’ previous work in service oriented architecture to create a flight operations platform that will encompass aircraft movement, load planning and air-to-ground communications. Continental will be migrated from its current mainframe environment onto the new platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“With the fast-paced environment of the airline industry, it is important for Continental to have state-of-the-art flexible tools to enable us to adjust to changing business conditions to maximize performance and deliver the best quality for our customers,” Continental chief information officer Ron Anderson-Lehman said in announcing the deal.

EDS said it is forming a partnership with Continental to create a fully integrated suite of flight operations services which it can in turn market to global airlines. Timing of the suite of applications is still being finalized.
