Whatever its benefits, outsourcing brings with it some potentially dangerous pitfalls, especially today. This makes it more important than ever for CIOs to develop specific competencies as they strive to achieve an efficient and effective sourcing environment, according to research firm Gartner.
"The reason why multisourcing competencies are now more important is that the sourcing world has gotten more complex," Frank J.H. Ridder, an IT sourcing analyst at Gartner, told CIOZone. "Many new options like clouding computing and SaaS, and also business-level solutions that include IT, make sourcing deeper. And sourcing has also gotten broader. Sourcing projects now almost always include all business units in an organization, not just a few."
Meanwhile, outsourcing deals are often notoriously difficult to build and manage, often fail to deliver expected outcomes and fail to evolve, Gartner states. This may explain why, according to a recent Gartner benchmark study, 55 percent of global organizations manage their sourcing activities tactically and at an operational level, failing to add a strategic management layer and invest enough in developing critical multisourcing competencies.
To build a successful, outcome-oriented sourcing environment, Gartner has identified ten key competencies for CIOs and sourcing managers.
