Tech Mahindra which recently acquired controlling interest in Satyam Computer Services may be preparing to make significant cutbacks in the outsourcer's employee ranks.

Reuters quoted Vineet Nayyar, CEO of Tech Mahindra, as saying that the Satyam head count was severely bloated, "It's more than 10,000 people are excess," Nayyar said. Satyam currently has 40,000 employees.

Subsequent to Nayyar's statement The Times of India reported that Naresh Jhangiani, global head of HR at Satyam BPO, and V Satyanandam, head of corporate services, have submitted their resignations. Earlier, Kulwinder Singh, head of marketing (Asia Pacific), Satyam, and previously with Satyam BPO's global head of marketing and communication, has resigned.

"Ultimately if the company fails, you have 40,000 people out of the job. Nobody wants that." Nayyar told Reuters. "I think the future is great but there will have to be a few sacrifices in terms of compensation, in terms of a large number of things... Some form of least painful way of reduction in staff is an option which will have to be looked at," he said.

A number of Indian newspapers are reporting that Tech Mahindra is likely to cut up to 8,000 of Satyam's non-billable staff after it officially takes over the company June 1.
