David,
Great article and open source reference resource, thanks for putting this together. It would be interesting to know, given the recent acquisition of Mysql by SUN Microsystems if CIOs are tasked with the role of seeking similar open source acquisitions for the purpose of reaching new markets for their proprietary products and services. Is this audience development, raising brand and product awareness, or have these open source programs become so entrenched in the core business of many companies that the acquisition just makes good business sense?

Sun is both proprietary and open source. Their Solaris operating system is now available as open source (http://opensolaris.org/os/), and Linux is available on Sun hardware. Sun is less interested in the software business than the hardware business.
I suspect the first thing that will come out of the MySQL acquisition is big pushes for Sun hardware MySQL appliances.
Finally, open source is not a niche. You wouldn't ask "have these Windows programs become so entrenched...", as if Windows programs were a curiosity, would you? So too it is with open source, especially in the web & server space.
