For many of us, smartphones have come to play such a central role in our lives that it may be hard to remember a time without them. In fact, chances are good that even as you're reading this there's a smartphone within easy reach, whether it's a BlackBerry, iPhone, Android or Pre, or one of a host of alternatives.
But less than five years ago, business users and consumers alike were still complaining that a mobile phone had yet to be effectively fused with the functionality of a computer in a truly easy-to-use package. That can't be said about the array of phones on the market now. Let's see how we got there.
