Invitrogen Taps US Airways CIO To Head Global IT
Invitrogen, a $3.5 billion provider of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products based in Carlsbad, Calif., has hired away the chief information officer of US Airways as it looks to role out new enterprise systems and consolidate data centers.
Invitrogen made news earlier this summer when it completed a deal to purchase Applied Biosystems of Foster City, Calif., for $6.7 billion in cash and stock. Applied Biosystems is best known as the company that provided most of the equipment used in the Human Genome Project.
The hiring of US Airways CIO Joe Beery will provide the company with the expertise it needs to consolidate systems as a result of the deal and allow it to role out new systems to meet growth plans, chief executive Greg Lucier said in a statement.
"Joe Beery will build upon the solid IT foundation we have in place, and will be instrumental in integrating Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems technologies to give our customers access to an even greater breadth of products and solutions," said Lucier.
Beery brings a 25-year background in IT leadership to the role. He served as US Airways' senior vice president and CIO, responsible for all IT systems and applications, as well as revenue generation and customer service programs. He was the CIO of America West prior to its merger with US Airways, and was responsible for integrating the legacy systems at US Airways to the America West model.
Beery says he will lean heavily on that experience as he focuses on the Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems integration. "We plan to deliver our new Web ordering and customer relationship management systems and data center consolidations in 2009, while also planning for ERP implementations in Asia-Pacific," said Beery.
PricewaterhouseCoopers Names New U.S. CIO
PricewaterhouseCoopers announced that Stuart Fulton, a technology leader with its tax business unit, has been promoted to the role of CIO for its overall U.S. operations.
Fulton will lead the firm's 1,200-member information technology team, which support some 30,000 employees and partners across the country.
Fulton has served as the global CIO for the firm's tax practice since 2003. He joined the firm in 1987 and became a partner in 1997.
Fulton said in a statement that he is looking forward to working with the business to find new ways to harness IT to deliver business value. "There are enormous opportunities ahead to build on this strong foundation, and to provide PwC's professionals with the innovative solutions and support they need to be successful," he said.
