The Hartford has named Brian O'Connell to the newly created role of corporate-wide chief information officer and handed him a challenging task.

O'Connell, who currently serves as CIO of the company's life operation, will now be responsible for developing and implementing a centralized, enterprise-wide information technology strategy.

"A cross-company, integrated approach to technology management will provide us with a more efficient and effective strategy to meet our goals," said company President Tom Marra in announcing the promotion. O'Connell will report to Marra. " Brian will provide the necessary leadership and technology vision to ensure that we are not only executing today, but are forward thinking in terms of what our customers will need and expect from us in the future."

O'Connell joined the Hartford, Conn.-based financial services company in 2007 as vice president of IT management for the company's life operations. Prior to joining The Hartford, O'Connell had a 25-year tenure with Accenture, and managed the consulting firm's life insurance industry group.
