It's All About the Network and Featured Speaker: Bruce Culbert
As the recession deepens, the competition for IT jobs will become fiercer. The question for a lot of job seekers, is how do you get your name on the radar screen of a hiring company and their hiring managers?
One method that is often overlooked, is the rising phenomenon of social networks, says Bruce Culbert, chief executive officer of iSymmetry, an IT consulting and recruiting services provider with offices in Washington, D.C. and Alpharetta, Ga.
There are the large social networks such as Facebook and MySpace, which can be of some value to those networking among friends and extended-acquaintances. But an even better place to go contact hunting is in a growing number of business-oriented social networks. Culbert notes that in the past year a number of social networks dedicated to individual industries, companies or skill sets, such as CIOZone, have sprung up, providing another avenue to network and connect.
"Most of these (professional) social networks have the ability to post a mini profile," notes Culbert. Don't take this opportunity lightly, he advises. Use the mini profile as an opportunity to showcase your skills and put your best foot forward. "A good concise, well written profile can really cast you in a good light," he says.
Another benefit of social networks is that they usually provide an opportunity to contribute, be it through blogs or other means. "It's a very good way to get on the radar screen," he notes.
Culbert has created a five-part audiocast series on How to Land an IT Job in a Down Economy. CIOZone presented the first part in the series last week, Knowing Where to Hunt.
In this week's episode, It's All About the Network, Culbert discussed the following topics:
How to find the most attractive job opportunities for you now.
How to get in front of hiring managers.
How to leverage and successfully use online social networking.
