Departing Home Depot CIO Robert DeRodes has been hired by electronic commerce and payments company First Data to lead the company's technology and innovation strategy. DeRodes will join another former high profile CIO, Michael Capellas, at Denver-based First Data. Capellas was the CIO at Compaq Computer until being vaulted into the CEO role at Compaq in July of 1999. Capellas went on to become the CEO at MCI, and in the summer of 2007 he was tapped by private investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) to take over the helm at First Data.
DeRodes has been the CIO at Home Depot since 2002, where he was responsible for leading a massive technology transformation at the home improvements retailer. In April of this year he announced that he was stepping down as Home Depot CIO, but his departure was not expected to take place until the end of the year.
By hiring DeRodes, First Data gains an IT executive with leadership experience spanning some 39 years. He served as the CEO for Delta Technology and the CIO for Delta Air Lines, and was the CTO for Citibank's Global Card Products Group. In addition, he led software development and systems implementations at The SABRE Group, and the United States Automobile Association.
In a statement, DeRodes says he is eager to roll up his sleeves again. "I truly enjoy bringing together great people and emerging technology to not only solve today's problems, but tomorrow's way of doing business," he said.
Capellas said that DeRodes' team will focus on identifying, creating and implementing technologies that provide customers solutions and drive industry innovation.
First Data processes a wide range of electronic transactions. It has operations in 37 countries and provides services to more than 5.4 million merchant locations and some 2,000 card issuers and their customers. Its STAR network provides debit card services at 2.1 million ATM machines and retail locations.
