HSBC Creates New CIO Role

International bank HSBC has asked its North American chief information officer Andrew Armishaw to take on significantly more responsibilities.

Armishaw will continue to perform the traditional roles of a CIO, but the bank has asked him to also assume responsibility for operations—a relatively unusual twist for a CIO. His new title is Chief Technology and Services Officer.

In announcing the promotion HSBC says, "This position at HSBC was developed as part of a global initiative to create a common business framework for core support functions across the company." As such, Armishaw is responsible for ensuring HSBC's information technology and operations teams work closely together "to enchance the customer experience, create greater consistency in how HSBC operates, and improve economies of scale across businesses."

Armishaw will also take on responsibility for HSBC's security and fraud operations, corporate real estate and other operational functions for HSBC North America.

In the CSO role, Herrin will oversee risk management services for the Princeton, N.J., company as well as ensure compliance of Heartland's IT security strategy and the protection of consumer and merchant data.

Herrin is a certified information systems security professional (CISSP) and joins the company from Intervoice, a provider of interactive voice systems. The role of CSO is new for Heartland, and Herrin will also be asked to ensure the company's compliance with newly implemented Payment Card Industry (PCI) regulations.

PGP Hires Steven Soderberg for CIO

Data protection software firm PGP has hired Steven Soderberg as its new CIO. The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company said Soderberg will be responsible for driving all of its global IS/IT systems, including voice and data networks, desktop and server support, business application systems and messaging technologies.

Soderberg joins PGP from Otis Spunkmeyer, a San Leandro, Calif., manufacturer of baked goods, where he held the CIO post for three years.
