Google Android Developer Joins Coupons Inc.; Pearson Names Chief Security Officer

The leader of the engineering team that developed the Android smartphone operating platform for Google, has joined a Silicon Valley marketing company.

Steve Horowitz, who spent three years at Google as engineering director on the Google Android mobile operating system, has assumed the role of chief technology officer at Coupons Inc., based in Mountain View, Calif.

Coupons, which operates the site Coupons.com, allows consumers to print off savings coupons on a wide range of products. The company says that in 2008, consumers printed off more than $300 million worth of coupons from its platform.

At Coupons, Horowitz will oversee all of the company's worldwide engineering, product management and technology efforts. His experience in mobile applications will be leveraged to expand the company's platform onto cell phones and other devices.

"Our business is experiencing unprecedented growth, and as we extend our digital promotions platform to in-store, in-appliance and mobile phones, this is the ideal time for Steve to bring his deep experience to our team," Coupons CEO Steven Boal said in announcing the hiring.

Prior to joining Google, Horowitz spent nine years at Microsoft working on a variety of consumer products, including IPTV, Windows Media Center, Ultimate TV, Dishplayer and WebTV.

Pearson Names Kenneth Stephens Chief Security Officer

Pearson, a publisher of educational materials, announced it has created a new chief security officer position and named Kenneth Stephens to the role.

Stephens joins the Upper Saddle River, N.J.-based company from Fair Issac Corp., a provider of credit scoring and fraud detection solutions, where he was director of global information security for the last three years.

At Pearson, Stephens has been charged with ensuring the safety and privacy of customer information, as well as the company's assets and products.

"Ken's priorities will be in the areas of data privacy, security and regulatory compliance, as we continue to guarantee the protection of our employees, our customers, and the millions of students who use our products throughout the world," said Atish Banerjea, Pearson chief technology officer. "As information technology continues to develop, confidentiality and security take on increasing significance."

Prior to his work at Fair Issac, Stephens also served as CSO at General Electric Healthcare.
