Tower Automotive Deploys Activplant


Tower Automotive, a manufacturer of structural components for vehicle manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, Honda and Toyota, has chosen to deploy software from Activplant of London, Ontario, to monitor and improve performance of its plant machinery and operations. The company will implement Activplant's Throughput Analyzer software across its global operations after successfully testing the software at five locations. According to a statement by the company, "the Throughput Analyzer, cuts through [the] mass of manufacturing data and provides an unbiased view of the plant floor, identifying the chronic disruptions to product flow or constraints."

Broadband Penetration Soars


The need for Internet speed has driven broadband penetration in U.S. homes to increase by more 300% since 2002, according to a report released this week by Scarborough Research. The New York-based research firm says that in 2002 just 12 percent of U.S. adults had broadband connections in their homes. Now, almost half (49%), or 112 million adults, have broadband. In terms of type of broadband connections, DSL connections gained the most, increasing 575% over that period while cable modems increased 188%. The San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose region is the most plugged-in market in the country, with 62% of adults having broadband in the home, followed by Boston, 61%, San Diego, 61% and Hartford/New Haven, 60%.


Infosys Sees Sales Accelerating


Infosys Technologies, India's second-largest software services provider, thinks the possible U.S. recession could be good for business. The Bangalore-based company believes U.S. corporations may send more work overseas this year to cut costs, and is predicting a 21 percent increase in sales, to $5.1 billion. The company reported a 9.2% rise in fourth-quarter profit to $313 million for the period ended March 31. The company hired more than 33,000 people in the past fiscal year, bringing its total staff up to 92,000. It says it plans to add another 25,000 people in the current fiscal year.


AOL Buys Sphere


Time Warner's Internet unit, AOL, has purchased San Francisco-based Sphere, to gain access to technology that allows users to search for contextually relevant articles and blog posts. Financial terms were not disclosed. Sphere's platform connects current articles from sources such as CNN, Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal, to contextually relevant content from across the Internet such as blog posts, video, and photos. AOL has had an ongoing relationship with Sphere.

AMD Loses CTO


Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) said that its chief technology officer, Phil Hester, has resigned "to pursue other activities." The company does not plan to replace Hester and said that his responsibilities will be distributed among the CTOs of the company's business units. Earlier this month AMD says it would cut about 10 percent of its workforce, but a spokesperson said Hester's departure is unrelated.
