Bausch & Lomb Expands CIO Role
Eye care specialist Bausch & Lomb has named Alan Farnsworth as its new chief information officer, but in an unusual step has tied the CIO role to customer relations.
Farnsworth takes over the CIO role from Evon Jones, who left the company last month to assume the CIO post at Liz Claiborne.
Farnsworth is a veteran of Rochester, N.Y.-based Bausch & Lomb, having joined the company in 1988 as the vice president of international business development. Since 2001, he has been president of the company's Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
In a statement, chief executive Gerald Ostrov says the newly created position of vice president customer service and information technology and CIO, means Farnsworth will be able to focus on how new technologies might benefit customers. "As we develop the company for sustained growth, harnessing and sharing knowledge for the benefit of our customers and teams is crucial," Ostrov said.
Farnsworth does not come naturally into the CIO role. His career has largely been focused on business development and he has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Rochester.
