Oil and gas services company Baker Hughes announced that it has hired Derek Mathieson as its new chief technology officer. But in a rather unusual move, the Houston headquartered company has also made Mathieson responsible for marketing.

Mathieson joins Baker Hughes from WellDynamics, a provider of intelligent completion technology to the upstream oil industry, where he most recently served as chief executive officer.

"Derek Mathieson has a strong technical background and years of experience in both exploration and the oilfield service industry," Baker Hughes President and Chief Executive Chad Deaton said in announcing the hiring. "His record of accomplishments in the development of successful strategies, products and businesses will be invaluable as Baker Hughes continues to establish its technical leadership and to expand into new markets."

At WellDynamics Mathieson's roles included vice president of technology, business development and marketing.

With business and technology becoming more aligned and more reliant upon each other, the CTO heading up the marketing portfolio seems only natural.

Wesley I agree with your comment and I think we may see more CIOs or CTOs taking on marketing responsibilties. Just last week resort operator Gaylord Entertainment asked its CIO Rich Maradik to also assume the role of chief marketing officer.
