MEGA International: Aiming To Provide Easy-To Use Analysis, Modeling

By Bob Violino

Since MEGA International was created in 1991, the company's focus has been on providing businesses and government agencies with easy-to-use business process analysis and modeling products.

"The company was founded to provide software tools for the business process analyst to describe business processes," says Terry Lee, vice president of North American operations for MEGA. "Later on we got into enterprise architecture technology. Our ability to do impact analysis and reporting are two [areas] that we win a lot of deals," Lee says.

Indeed, today the company counts a number of well-known companies among its customers, including Morgan Stanley, GlaxoSmithKline and Abbott Labs, according to Lee. "We tend to be heavy in banking, finance and insurance, but we're in just about every vertical you can imagine," Lee says.

MEGA, which is headquartered in Paris and operates offices in countries including the U.S., Great Britain, Italy and Germany, was created as a spin-off from Cap Gemini and acquired by current president and CEO Lucio de Risi in 1991. The company has grown from a 10-consultant firm with clients in France to a global software and services company with more than 300 employees.

Revenue from products and services in the U.S. has been growing at an annual compound rate of about 15% over the past four years, Lee says. In the most recent fiscal year, total worldwide revenue was more than $40 million, he says. No numbers are available on profit. In the early years, about 10% of the company's revenue came from business in the U.S., and that market is growing fast, Lee says.

The company's main product offerings include the MEGA Modeling Suite and the MEGA GRC (governance, risk and compliance) Suite.

The latest version of the MEGA Modeling Suite provides Web-based reporting of business process analysis and enterprise architecture data to users throughout an organization, via business intelligence applications.

A central component of the suite, called MEGA Advisor, provides enterprise architecture and business process analysis project managers with a central place to consolidate and deliver information in the proper context for specific users, based on customized role definitions.

Other components include MEGA Process, an application that provides a modeling platform for business process analysis that can be shared and reused by multiple people, and MEGA Architecture, a service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based program that lets companies manage IT system changes, define new developments or maintenance plans and track improvements in service management.

The MEGA GRC (governance, risk and compliance) Suite is a set of Web-based tools based on a common platform that enables companies to implement corporate governance programs including operational risk management, internal audits, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

In addition to its software products, the company offers consulting and training services. MEGA International employs a team of specialized business consultants who help organizations deploy its analysis and modeling technology.

As for future product development, Lee says MEGA International is working on integrating its process modeling tools with business activity monitoring (BAM) technology, so organizations can collect metrics about processes and problems users are having in order to make improvements. MEGA International is collaborating on product integration with BAM vendor Systar and others, he says.
