IDS Scheer Offers Integrated Portfolio Of BPM Products
By Bob Violino
Since its founding, IDS Scheer has helped define the business process management market. Its first offerings were based on the Y-Model, a reference framework that helps companies identify and classify business processes.
Today, the Saarbrücken, Germany, company provides the ARIS Platform for Process Excellence, an integrated portfolio for the design, implementation and control of business processes. The software covers every phase of a BPM project.
The product portfolio has won over some 6,000 customers in more than 70 countries, including Bayer, British Telecom, Deutsche Bank, Lufthansa, Nokia, and Procter & Gamble.
The company, which was spun off in 1984 from the Institut für Wirtschaftsinformatik (Institute for Information Systems), has enjoyed consistent financial success as the market for BPM has grown over the years. According to preliminary calculations, IDS Scheer AG had global sales of $576 million in fiscal 2007, up 11% compared with the previous year, slightly outperforming its own forecast. Using those same calculations, earnings before interest, taxes and amortization of intangible assets increased by 22% to around $58.5 million last year.
Scheer helps its customers get the most out of investments in strategic business and technology initiatives such as BPM, service-oriented architecture (SOA), and enterprise architecture, says a company spokeswoman.
The ARIS Platform for Process Excellence includes four specialized modules: the Aris Strategy Platform, Aris Design Platform, Aris Implementation Platform and Aris Controlling Platform.
Aris Strategy Platform includes a Web-based tool that helps companies optimize processes using key performance indicators; balanced scorecard systems for the design, implementation, management and realignment of projects; and Web-based simulation of business processes designed to allow companies to analyze and improve business processes.
Aris Design platform offers Web-based design, analysis and optimization of business processes; enterprise-wise IT architecture management; and modeling capabilities.
The Implementation Platform enables businesses to execute process models in IT systems, configure enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, manage business rules and create a service-oriented architecture.
The Controlling Platform provides ongoing monitoring of business processes, implementation of corporate performance management systems, and the creation of an enterprise-wide compliance management system.
In addition to its software, IDS Scheer provides consulting services in areas such as SOA; supply chain management; business intelligence; BPM; and governance, risk and compliance management. Consultants have industry-specific experience in sectors including consumer packaged goods, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, papers, metals, retail and textile. Its managed service offerings support the entire business process lifecycle.
IDS Scheer frequently collaborates with business partners, including enterprise platform providers such Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP in what the company calls "open BPM." The strategy enables IDS Scheer to offer a broader range of offerings, according to the spokeswoman.
"Only through our relationships with leading technology providers could IDS Scheer develop ARIS into a technology-independent software product," the spokeswoman says. "IDS Scheer's business model embraces collaboration with partners to further enhance and extend product capabilities, consulting offerings and regional reach."
