4 Tips For Creating A Culture of Candor Print E-mail
Monday, 04 August 2008

In their book Transparency: How Leaders Create a Culture of Candor by Warren Bennis, Daniel Goleman, and James O'Toole, the authors talk about the need for more candor within organizations—arguing that the more leaders fight transparency, the less successful they are. But how does a company create a culture of candor. Here are some tips the book offers:

1. Provide equal access to information to all
2. Refrain from punishing those who constructively demonstrate imperial nakedness
3. Refrain from rewarding spurious loyalty
4. Empower and reward principled contrarians

I believe strongly in point no: 1&4. 2 I have not understood and 3 I believe, is a management issue which is generic in nature.

To create a culture of candor, these few points may be noted:

1. The leaders walk their talk and encourage constructive arguments.

2. Employees should be rewarded for asking as many questions as possible before and during project progress.

3. Open forum to promote candor in practice should be encouraged.

Thanks and regards
