Data Domain Launched

In 2001, Brian Biles, a former vice president of marketing at VA Linux Systems, got together with Kai Li, a professor of computer science at Princeton University, to form Data Domain in Santa Mateo, Calif.

At the time most data backups were still being done on tape, largely due to cost. Biles and Li aimed to update this process by introducing disk-based technology that could not only compete with tapes, but was more efficient.
