The BNSF business intelligence initiative demonstrates that Green initiatives can produce major benefits for companies. Again, for a $30,000 initial investment, BNSF may ultimately be able to achieve as much as $46 million in savings.
But it is just one Green front where the company has been active, notes Hiatte. By investing in a wide range of areas, such as more fuel efficient locomotives, wheel bearings that require less energy to pull railcars, and testing alternative fuels, BNSF has managed to increase its overall fuel mileage by 11% since 1996.
In fact, if the average SUV was as fuel efficient as BNSF's trains, in terms of gross tons moved per gallon, your SUV would get about 400 miles to the gallon.
Kreb says the MVP Fuel program is something that has given the IT team and the company in general great satisfaction. "We were proud of how quickly we were able to gather all the information that was necessary and implement it, and I can think we can all say that we're proud BNSF is able to run more fuel efficiently and save money as a result," Kreb says.
