Here are some of the tips BNSF train engineers have shared on the company's internal Web site to achieve greater fuel efficiency:
- Float (coast) when you can.
- Gravity is your friend (sometimes!). If you have a planned stop try to slow down while moving upgrade.
- Use downgrades to help you accelerate.
- Stay out of the higher power notches if possible; i.e. if your train is accelerating at a good rate in 6 notch, is it really necessary to use 7 or 8 notch?
- Communicate: Listen to what is going on ahead of you. (So you can coast if you know there's a slowdown up ahead.)
