Declaring cybersecurity a national priority, President Barack Obama announced last week that he will create a cyber office in the White House, led by a coordinator who will be a member of the National Security Council.

Along with the announcement, the White House issued a 60-page Cyberspace Policy Review, which was created by the National Security Council and Homeland Security Council under the direction of Melissa Hathaway, a former Booz Allen Hamilton consultant, who spent two years working on cybersecurity in the Bush White House.

Obama outlined a skeletal five-prong cybersecurity initiative in his speech, but the report offers more details. "The architecture of the nation's digital infrastructure, based largely upon the Internet, is not secure or resilient," says the study, which lays out a ten-point, near-term plan that will allow the government to combat those risks, in coordination with the private sector. A look at the recommendations follows.
