SAP has signed an agreement with Valero Energy, North America's largest oil refiner, to develop joint applications catering to the oil and gas industry.

Valero has been an SAP partner since 1997, but the new agreement extends the collaboration between the two companies. Valero will work with SAP to create applications that more closely conform to the needs of the company and its 16 oil refineries across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.

"We see this relationship as highly strategic, seeking to create value both for SAP and Valero," Hal Zesch, Valero's chief information officer, said in a statement. "Initiatives that encourage and enable innovation must be incorporated into a company's operations to stimulate growth."

SAP will leverage the expertise it gains in working closely with Valero to develop more sophisticated enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications for the oil and gas industry. The companies have signed a global enterprise agreement (GEA) to formalize the partnership.

"In adding Valero to our respected list of GEA customers, we further demonstrate the value that the broad portfolio of SAP solutions brings to the world's most innovative and successful companies," stated Bill McDermott, SAP's president of global field operations.

The companies said the partnership will include the following components:

  • SAP will leverage its portfolio to streamline Valero's core business processes and enable a "business self-service" strategy
  • The companies will collaborate on a world-class energy solution with the sustainability team at SAP.
  • The companies will co-innovate to extend and standardize Valero's risk management and operational performance capabilities
  • SAP will partner with Valero to lower the total cost of its IT landscape.

Valero, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, has about $119 billion in annual revenues and employs 22,000.
