Lenovo is looking to stand out in the race for upgrades to Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system with a line of personal computers it says have been fine-tuned for a "faster and richer" experience.
Among the benefits touted for the Windows 7 Enhanced Experience lineup are PCs that load 56 percent faster than those running Windows XP or Vista and that also shut down in as little as five seconds. The PCs also offer new system maintenance tools and increased security features.
"Lenovo's technical team and developers have worked with Microsoft during the making of Windows 7 to create an exceptionally-engineered hardware and software experience," Fran O'Sullivan, senior vice president of the Think product group division, said in a statement. Lenovo is a Chinese-owned company and O'Sullivan is based at Lenovo's Research Triangle N.C. regional headquarters.
"Advances in PC technology are giving users even better tools to increase their productivity at work, and this enhanced experience certification lets customers know that our Think PCs are optimized for business," added O'Sullivan.
Lenovo says its engineers have been able to tweak its systems so that ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCenter desktop PCs will boot Windows 7 much quicker than those running Windows XP or Vista. Its IdeaPad and IdeaCenter consumer PCs don't quite get the same improvements, but Lenovo says they will load Windows 7 33 percent faster and shut down 50 percent faster than "non-optimized PCs even while still initializing PC features such as anti-virus software.
With the economy in a slow recovery mode, analysts have been uncertain as to whether corporations and consumers would quickly adopt Windows 7, which is due to be released Oct. 22, or whether they would delay implementation. If PC manufacturers can deliver performance boosts like those claimed by Lenovo, it may spur adoption.
Lenovo outlined a number of other features it says will be included in the new lineup of computers as a result of optimizing performance to Windows 7:
Better video display. PCs include a high-definition graphics hardware decoder that removes much of the burden of decoding high-definition video from the CPU, allowing stutter-free video up to 1080p.
A OneKey Rescue system and Lenovo Rescue System 3.0 can back up and recover data two times faster than previous versions and features anti-virus and system repair functions. Users can also perform an anti-virus scan with the press of a button.
Work from anywhere experience. The lineup supports Ethernet, WiFi, 3G mobile broadband, 4G WiMax and Bluetooth. Included technology allows users to automatically switch between wired and wireless connections.
