CA has named a long-time computer industry veteran as its new chief executive officer.

The software giant, which specializes in systems to manage large computer infrastructures, said its current chairman William McCracken will take on the dual role of CEO and chairman.

In announcing the appointment, Gary Fernandes, a lead director for CA, said McCracken has been directing the company's day-to-day operations for the past five months after previous CEO John Swainson retired in September. Fernandes led the CEO search committee. "We had the benefit of watching him lead the company and it became evident to us that Bill McCracken has the knowledge, industry expertise, and experience to take CA to the next level," he said in a statement.

McCracken, 67, joined CA's board of directors in 2005 and became non-executive chairman in 2007. Prior to joining CA, he held numerous executive positions at IBM during a 36-year tenure with the company.

He takes over the Islandia, N.Y.-headquartered software giant, at a time when its financial results seem to be improving. CA announced that in its fiscal third quarter, which ended Dec. 31, it recorded an 8 percent increase in revenue and a 24 percent increase in profit. The company earned $257 million in the quarter on $1.1 billion in sales.

"We are very pleased with our third quarter performance," McCracken said in announcing the results. "We achieved robust revenue growth, improved both GAAP and non-GAAP operating margins by a percentage point year-over-year, and reported strong cash flow from operations of $342 million."

North American revenue was up 8 percent in the quarter, reaching $655 million, while international revenue fell 1 percent to $473 million. The company said the quarter benefitted from a $10 million contribution from its acquisition of NetQoSR, which closed in November. The company also benefitted from a $48 million boost from currency exchange rates.

CA said the company saw significant demand for its Mainframe 2.0 products, identity and access management, and security offerings, as well as for its CA Wily application performance management products.

During the quarter CA released 12 new and updated products, including its ecoSoftware line. The ecoSoftware product is designed to help companies manage the implementation, progress and outcomes of their global sustainability initiatives. It features modules to measure and report energy and natural resource consumption and to account for greenhouse gas emissions, as well as manage data center energy costs.
