No matter how you look at it, 2008 will go down as historic.
It was the year Barack Obama shattered more than 200 years of history by being elected the first African-American president. The year some of the largest and most venerable names in the financial services industry went bust. A year when the price of oil flirted with record highs near $150 a barrel, then plummeted just as quickly to the $40 level. And it was a year which could result in the worst recession suffered by a generation.
Lost among those headlines is the fact that this was also a busy year on the technology news front. In May, Hewlett-Packard was finally able to gain the clout it desired to challenge IBM for a serious share of the global IT consulting market when it acquired Electronic Data Systems for $13.9 billion. In June, Bill Gates stepped down from his day-to-day role at Microsoft, signaling the end of an era, and in September Google introduced the first cell phone with the Android open operating system, posing a real threat to Apple and its popular iPhone.
