Methodology

CIOZone's ranking of the 50 highest-paid technology executives is based on the CIO Zone 100, our previously published list of the 100 biggest technology companies.

We looked at the prospectuses for the 2007 fiscal years of the top 53 companies on that list, after excluding SAP, Yahoo and McAfee.

We excluded Yahoo and McAfee because they hadn't filed proxy statements for their 2007 fiscal years as of May 2, when we concluded our research. We excluded SAP because, as a non-U.S. company, it does not face the same disclosure rules on executive compensation as U.S. companies.

Autodesk's 2008 fiscal year ended on January. 31, and its prospectus was available in time for us to use its 2008 compensation figures instead of older 2007 figures.

In most cases, our compensation figures are identical to those that appear in the proxy statements of each listed executive's company. However, for purposes of readability, we compressed a few categories. We have added pension benefits, where they existed, to the "all other" compensation column and have included non-equity incentive-plan compensation as part of an executive's cash bonus.
