The current economic crisis promises to make things interesting for CIOs and other IT executives.
How can business technology leaders ready themselves for the tough times ahead?
Bob Rouse, who directs the Society for Information Management's Regional Leadership Forum, a training program for aspiring chief information officers, thinks there are five books every IT managers should read now.
The RLF has become somewhat of an authority on CIO reading lists. Each year, the organization compiles a list of books that program participants must read as part of their coursework. The list is now seen as the annual reading for all IT managers.
In addition to providing the CIOZone with this current book list, Rouse, who's also a computer science professor at Washington University in St. Louis, offers his comments on why he thinks each of the texts will help IT executives.
In addition to the books, Rouse also recommends that CIOs regularly read the Economist magazine, because, he says, the British magazine "reflects a global view of current events written from a perspective that is rather different from U.S.-centric reporting and publications."
He also says they should listen to a couple of National Public Radio (NPR) podcasts by Ira Glass in the "This American Life" series. The podcasts are number 365, "Another Frightening Show About the Economy," dated Oct. 3, 2008, and number 355, "The Giant Pool of Money," dated May 9, 2008. Rouse says, "these two podcasts give you the best explanation of our current economic situation with clear examples from the studied opinions of various experts. This American Life has been hosted on NPR for over a decade."
