What strategy to align with |

A specific challenge that seems to face all IT practitioners is that of aligning your ICT activities with your corporate strategies. In particular this even more of a headache when you are not in an industry where the application of ICT and related innovation is directly related to the organisations strategy (contrasting, for example, support IT in a mining operation with strategic IT in a banking or commercial environment). During fiscally challenging periods like the one just experienced, this becomes even more significant as organisations under pressure cannot realistically have narrowly defined strategies that will hold for more than a couple of months, whereas the application of ICT is often costly, lengthy to implement and all too often the ROI period is measured in years as opposed to months (assuming it is even directly quantifiable).
So how do we do we do it, how best can the CIO or even ITM formulate a short term strategy that alignes with the business stresses of the day...
