Jeff Veen (of Hotwired fame) and his cohorts at Small Batch have come up with a simple, genius idea called Typekit.

Typekit uses style sheets and new browser support for linking to a font file to bring real typography to the Web. As the announcement explains, “That means you can write a bit of CSS, include a URL to a font file, and have your page display with the typography you expect.”

Your branding manager will buy you flowers.

What’s truly instructive here, though, is that Small Batch has thought through the entire ecosystem, making Typekit a real solution. On the technical level, they’ve solved the browser and development issues, but they’ve also built licensing agreements with the foundries and solved business issues around reporting and payment.

Online businesses can be doubly-profitable – from the unique service we deliver every day to our customers, but also from licensing or selling technologies we develop. What I’ve learned from Small Batch is, if we remember to look for innovative solutions beyond just the technologies, we can discover entire new businesses.

And then your CEO will do more than just buy you flowers.
