When you were a child, did a parent or a teacher every say to you “Two wrongs don’t make a right”? I was listening to a teleseminar on business etiquette and I heard a variation of that saying that I really liked:

“Two rudes don’t make a right.”

I think this saying works in our personal and our professional lives. It makes sense doesn’t it ? What do you think? Just because someone is rude to you, does not mean you need to be rude in return. You aren’t involved in any contests or reality shows where the rudest individual wins, are you? I think that would give new meaning to the name “The Biggest Loser”.

It can be tempting to repay a rude person by returning the rudeness. After all, why should you treat them with courtesy, they OBVIOUSLY don’t value good manners.
The irony of the rude payback is that the recipient of your payback rarely knows why you are being rude to them.  They simply do not realize that they were being rude to you. This is not necessarily an excuse. But is also not permission for you to behave badly.

If someone is rude, they are rude and the fact that they did not look up before they rammed their shopping cart into your back, does not make it OK. But for you to turn around and purposefully ram them back with your shopping cart is actually worse. Not to mention a little over the top and frightening.

What if you were the shopping cart rammer? Imagine, you are wandering through the grocery store and you are pushing your cart while reading your shopping list and oops, well you just bumped into me. Maybe you realize it (because I yelped like a startled dog) or maybe you do not (because you felt something squishy, but when you looked up I had already moved away from you). The next thing you know I am coming right at you maneuvering my shopping cart like a weapon. Yikes! Aren’t you going to go home and tell your friends and family about the crazy rude lady who attacked you at the store? Will the fact that you accidentally bumped me even be a part of your story? I guess we could do a remake of the movie ‘The Road Warrior’ and call it ‘The Shopping Cart Warrior’.

Two rudes do not make a right, nor do they make a good idea for a new movie!
