Suggestion box: How do I lower my &!#%!!! phone bill
Share This -
In one of my recent posts, I wrote that smart phones and netbooks/mini-notebooks need to converge into one device—and soon.
The genesis of that blog, for those of you haven’t dozed off already, is my monthly phone bill from Verizon. Currently, I’m paying for a land line, a DSL connection, a BlackBerry and a wireless broadband card for my notebook. While this is clearly a good arrangement for Verizon—and probably explains the recent purchase of upstate New York by the company’s CEO—it’s putting me in the poor house.
So my question to all you Zoners out there: how do I break this wireless cycle of poverty? I can lose the old-fashioned land line phone, which at this point, should probably be in a museum diorama depicting how ancient man ordered out for clam pizza.
My real problem, and thus last week’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated post on convergence, is how can I reduce my monthly outlay on my mobile devices? Ideally, I’d like to reduce the charges for either my notebook (which has the wireless broadband card) or my smart phone. Failing that, I’d like to reverse the charges, and have Verizon pick up the tab.
Any thoughts on this? Remember, the thinker-upper of the winning idea will not only be named CIOZone’s Braniac of the Week but will also receive a six-day, two-night trip to exotic Bora Bora,* assuming said winner is willing to pay for his/her own airfare, lodging, rental car, meals and entertainment.
I will gladly drive you to the airport.
*All contestants must be 18-years of age or older. No one associated with CIOZone may enter. Winning contestant must provide proof of citizenship. Contest limited to U.S. citizens and farm animals interested in seeing other lands. Offer void where exhibited.**
** This is not a real contest [NOTETO LEGAL: is that sufficient?]

Why not tether the smartphone to the laptop to reduce the bill. If it's a bluetooth enabled phone you should be able to logon to the web using it. I am not going guarantee that performance will match that of a dedicated broadband card.
