Starting a small IT firm
Starting as IT firm in small level is so easy, with one or few customers! But you should have the vision and mission plan for your company! It’s very important. And being an IT guy if you started a company by trusting your tech skill, you cannot run it in long run. i saw so many guys who started even don’t know how to speak or to give quotes to customers.
You should plan for all, if it is possible get some well experienced marketing persons and HR guys as working partners or you should be the master in everything, and in future you can find proper ones to fit and divide the departments.

The key is knowing your financial capability to support the business until your plans timing targets breakeven and then positive cashflow.
Can your product (whatever it is) make that hurdle to breakeven and positive cashflow within the timeframe of your financing ? Evaluate these two critical questions before you do anything else.

Dear John Stevenson thanks to your valuable comments.
It’s true when you are planning to start a company with out customers. You need to plan for your BEP. Because so many fixed expenses will be there, and atleast you need plan your budget for 1 or 2yrs depends on your product time frame and ability to put forward to market and reach the BEP and positive financial flow.

I agree, I also have known individuals who relied on their tech skills only and their companies did not last long.
I also agree that compared to other types of start-ups, an IT firm is relatively easier to initiate, especially service-related IT firms. However, the start-up time saved should be used to spend ample time determining target markets and your marketing plan/personas. Everything is secondary if you do not have income/customers.
A recent book I read has been very insightful regarding this: Tuned In. Check it out and let me know what you think.
