Can the plan, do, check, act or quality cycle apply to how we manage ourselves professionally? I think it does. In fact I think that managing your professional brand or image is really about using the quality cycle for your own development.
Plan – Be clear about what you want from your career. Be clear about what you want from current and future employment opportunities. And be very clear about what you represent as a professional and how you intend to project that image.
Do – Work your plan. Seek out opportunities that support your goals, learn to decline opportunities that do not support your goals. Make sure that your behavior represents you correctly.
Check – At regular intervals, stop and take inventory. Are you moving in the right direction? Are your original goals still pertinent? It is OK to make changes. And how is your professional image? Do you have a trusted associate who can tell you how you are perceived?
Act – After you take inventory, review the results. It is likely that you will have areas where you wish to make adjustments.
Managing your brand or your image is no less important than growing your technical skills.
