Microsoft seems to be under siege on a number of fronts these days, be it Apple in mobile apps, Google on the search engine and now operating system front, and even the economy is playing havoc with its scheduled fall release of Windows 7.

Here’s one more battle it doesn’t need. In a survey released this week by VendorRate, a Los Gatos, Calif. research firm that tracks vendor performance, customer satisfaction with Microsoft’s applications, server and infrastructure products and operating systems all took a big hit in the second quarter of 2009.

Here’s the highlights:

• Out of a possible score of 100, satisfaction with Microsoft’s applications was 64 – an 18% drop from the first quarter of 2009.

• Satisfaction with Microsoft’s server and infrastructure products scored at 55, a 17% fall from the first quarter.

• Satisfaction with Microsoft’s operating systems came in at 67, a 9.5% decline from Q1.

Microsoft wasn’t the worst of the bunch. The lowest rated vendor in the Q2 survey was Verizon Communications, which received a customer satisfaction score of 53. But the Redmond software giant should take note of the three-way fall.

“Microsoft was cruising along with satisfactory scores in earlier reports, but it simply fell off a cliff in this quarter,” Rick Schaefer, chief executive of VendorRate said in a statement. “Meanwhile, IBM Informix was among the top rated vendors for the fourth straight quarter, and this is the first time that ShoreTel made it into the top rankings.”

A full copy of the report can be viewed here, but here’s a snapshot of a few other members of the customer satisfaction honor roll.

• In addition to IBM Informix, which was rated the top vendor with a score of 96, next in line were ShoreTel at 92, Wayside Marketing at 89, Sybase at 86, Patrick Townsend Security at 85, Quest Software at 83, and Sun Microsystems at 81.

• GovConnection was rated as the top reseller with a score of 98.

• BI Consulting Group was rated the top consultant with a score of 92
